WE DEVELOP TAILOR-MADE TOOLS FOR MOLD AND DIE MAKING

In practically no other area of application are greater demands made on tools than in die and mould making. LMT KIENINGER long ago established its global reputation as a tool specialist for this machining application. An interview with Hanjo Gi?ler, product manager for mold and die manufacturing at LMT, about the company’s special know-how and how it benefits customers.

What are the special challenges facing manufacturers of precision tools

for use in die and mould making?

First of all, you need to bear in mind that continuously hardened steels and cast materials are used in the manufacture of dies and moulds. What is more, these materials have to be processed with the very highest precision. These two factors naturally mean that very great demands are made on the tools used.

You also have to rule out even the minutest machining faults, don’t you?

That’s right. Ultimately, the outline of the die precisely determines the shape of the finished tool. The smallest surface imperfections have a detrimental effect on the quality of the final components. If you consider the high-volume production quantities involved, for example, in the car chassis sector, it soon becomes clear why the issue of quality is so important in mould making.

Aren’t the processes and machines used subject to continuous development?

Of course. In view of the high standards required, die and mould making is something of a pace-setter in engineering development. In addition to this, modern and often high-tensile materials are deployed in many fields of application.

How do these different requirements affect tool development?

Cutting materials, tool geometries, tool coatings and cutting edge preparation are all important factors that we are constantly developing and adapting specifically to meet the requirements of die and mould making. Our new coating centre in Lahr now gives us the option of developing tailor-made high-performance coatings for specific applications in mold and die manufacturing.

What does that mean in concrete terms?

The new Nanomold Gold coating illustrates that rather well: this coating concept makes it possible to combine the individual layers in a variable way and choose different layer thicknesses. It is therefore possible to combine a top layer that is ideally suited for high cutting speeds with a core layer that also maintains its properties at low peripheral speeds.

What practical advantages does that offer?

There is a significant reduction in the width of the wear marks on the indexable insert. As a result, it is not only possible to increase operating times by roughly a third. The much slower development of wear along the cutting edge also guarantees consistent machining quality over a long period of time. Customers benefit from an even greater advantage: If they optimize the operating parameter, they can reduce operating times considerably – without shortening the tool life.

How important is LMT KIENINGER'S experience and process know-how – for example, when a customer approaches you with a new application?

Experience naturally plays a very great role. We examine the entire cutting process and draw up a machining strategy in partnership with our customers in order to be able to ensure the necessary machining quality and simultaneously achieve a high level of efficiency.

And where does that take place?

If the customer wishes, we can develop this strategy on a machining centre in Lahr – that’s a special service offered by LMT KIENINGER. But it is naturally also possible to work out a cutting strategy together with the customer on-site. We are very flexible.
